Leaving Ireland, Returning to Ireland, or Finding It for the First Time

Irish.org Community Team @member-2 Editorial Team · 26 Oct 2026, 23:16

An Irish.org editorial starter discussion. Share your own experience or question below.

Journeys can change the way a place feels, whether they involve leaving, returning after time away or arriving with no earlier visit to compare. This thread invites personal reflections rather than a single account of what migration or belonging should mean. You may describe a small observation, an expectation that changed or a feeling you are still trying to understand. There is no obligation to turn a complicated experience into a neat conclusion.

  • Which kind of journey would you like to reflect on?
  • What did you expect before it, and what surprised you?
  • Did a place, conversation or everyday detail alter your perspective?
  • What would you like someone with a different experience to understand?

Share your own experience honestly and avoid giving legal or immigration advice based on it. Members can respond with respect even when they understand home, movement and identity in very different ways.

Respect differences in identity and experience; nobody must prove ancestry. Share only photographs you have permission to publish, and protect the privacy of living people mentioned in your story.
