A difficult place name can slow otherwise promising research. Perhaps a handwritten word is unclear, a family pronunciation differs from a record or several locations seem plausible. Rather than asking others to guess from a name alone, explain the document, the approximate date and any surrounding geographical clues. You can transcribe the relevant words without uploading a complete certificate. This thread is a place to compare possibilities and identify what evidence might distinguish them.

  • What is your best transcription, including letters you are unsure about?
  • What type of historical record contains the place name?
  • Do neighboring names, occupations or a parish reference provide context?
  • Which possible places have you considered, and what would test each one?

Keep alternatives open until the evidence supports a choice. If you later resolve the place, return with the source that helped so the discussion becomes useful to the next person.

Please leave out sensitive details about living people, identity documents and private contact information. Shared surnames are clues, not proof of a relationship.
