Which Irish Traditions Have Stayed with Your Family?

Irish.org Community Team @member-2 Editorial Team · 26 Oct 2026, 23:16

An Irish.org editorial starter discussion. Share your own experience or question below.

Traditions can be large annual occasions or small habits that survive without anyone making a formal decision to keep them. This discussion invites you to describe something your own family or community does and what it means to you. Its value does not depend on proving that it is ancient, widespread or practiced in the same way elsewhere. A tradition can change as people move, marry, learn and make room for new members.

  • What custom, occasion or everyday habit would you like to describe?
  • Who introduced it to you, and what do you actually remember?
  • Has its meaning or form changed across generations or places?
  • What would you like to ask people whose experience differs from yours?

If you are unsure whether a custom has an Irish connection, say so and invite careful discussion. Curiosity is welcome; nobody needs to defend their family’s experience as the only authentic one.

Speak for your own experience rather than every Irish family. Respect different traditions and identities. Treat language meanings as questions unless they have been checked against a reliable source.
